It’s important that you maintain a consistent image among all of your business materials. This will help establish your company’s personality and make it so it is easily recognizable.
- 2. Poorly written content
Not all business owners have exceptional writing skills, and that’s ok. You can always hire someone else to write your blog posts. You can put together a schedule with the topics you would like to cover and provide them with the necessary information so they can write the blog.
If you do have strong writing skills, be sure to have someone else review your posts before they are published. Even the strongest writer can have spelling and grammatical mistakes!
- 3. Lack of personality
Yes, you want to ensure your blog is professional. But this doesn’t mean it has to lack personality! You want your blog to be entertaining so it holds the readers’ attention.
- 4. Adding content for the sake of adding content
Each post should have a purpose. If you struggle to think of topics, then perhaps you are posting too often. One way to help ensure you have appropriate topics to write about is to plan in advance. Create a monthly editorial calendar that you can follow. And remember that it’s ok to stray from your original plans. If there is something timely in the news, then by all means, comment on it!
- 5. Too much industry lingo and acronyms
Unless you are writing specifically for an industry audience, try not to include industry-specific lingo. Even if it is an industry blog, use language that even a newcomer will be able to understand.
The same is true of acronyms. Even if you think it’s an acronym that everyone knows, spell it out the first time it’s used in the posting so your readers aren’t left confused.
- 6. Improper usage of non-original content
It’s ok to use pictures, videos and articles that were created by someone else; but only if you have permission and if you give proper credit. Copyright laws apply to the Internet, so you want to be sure that you are giving credit where credit is due.
- 7. Personal pictures
You don’t want to be anonymous with your business blog. However, you also don’t want to be too personal. Leave your weekend antics and vacation play-by-play for your personal blog and keep your posts and pictures geared toward your professional life for your business blog.
- 8. Insider information
It can be incredibly tempting to spill the beans on a huge business development. However, keep it under wraps until you have made it public. You don’t want to leak insider information through your blog, especially if it’s something that could influence stocks or reveal information to your competitors (yes, you better bet your competitors are reading your blog!).
- 9. Complaints
You never want to air your business’ dirty laundry – whether it’s in-person with a client or over the Internet. Complaining about your employees, vendors, clients or competitors is extremely unprofessional and will leave a sour taste in your readers’ mouths.
- 10. Customer identities
Unless you have asked their permission, never publish your customers’ identities or work that you have done for them.
